Sudhanshu, Arjun, Soumyajit to headline MSC TT C’ship


PANAJI: The men’s doubles national champions duo of Arjun Ghosh- Ronit Bhanja will headline the fourth edition of Miramar Sports Club’s Invitational Table Tennis Championship to be organised in association with Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) and Goa Table Tennis Association (GTTA) to be held at Multipurpose Stadium, Peddem, Mapusa from April 26-28 along with men’s India No 4 Sudhanshu Grover, two-time Olympian Soumyajit Ghosh, 7-time national champion Abhishek Yadav and India Youth No 3 Jeet Chandra.

Apart from the top ranked Indian players, Goa junior and men number one Wesley Do Rosario, Dheeraj Rai, Manish Yadav, Diljeet Velingker, Mallika Gogoi, Sanisha Shetye, Prutha Parrikar, Nagesh Verekar, Anshuman Agarwal, Shantesh Mapshekar and former Goa champions Noel Noronha and Ajit Ghatker will be among those who will showcase their great finesse during the three day event, which will conclude on April 28.

Addressing a press conference at Hotel Manoshanti, Miramar Sports Club President Joel Andrade appealed to table tennis aficionados to come out in large numbers to witness the best paddlers in the country compete against each other for top honours. “I request all table-tennis aficionados to come out and watch the best paddlers in the country battle it out for the coveted trophy at the Multipurpose Stadium, Peddem, Mapusa from April 26-28. In all, the championship will include seven different categories, namely men’s team, men’s singles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, U-15 team, U-15 singles and ladies singles. Matches will begin at 9AM while the finals will be held on April 28, 2pm onwards.”

“We in Miramar Sports Club see this championship as a significant step to carry this beautiful sport forward in Goa. Every year this championship gets bigger and we are hopeful that this championship will encourage Goa to kick-start a revolution in table tennis with more corporates coming forward. We are in the process of organising an auction-based championship and hopefully everything will materialise in the next year,” Joel added.

Myron Pereira, treasurer, Miramar Sports Club, provided details of entries received. “There are around 150+ players who will participate in the championship. In the men’s team event, there are 22 teams participating while in the Under 15 team event, 16 teams will battle it out. We have a total prize purse of 1,00,000 up for grabs apart from trophies and gift hampers.”

Miramar Sports Club also launched its website — –– and its magazine — ReFRESH — at the hands of former State table tennis champion Narayan Ajit Ghantker.

Earlier, tournament adviser Sandeep Heble welcomed the gathering while club vice-president Noel Estibeiro proposed the vote of thanks.
